Thriller Film Ideas

Task 1 - Conventions of a thriller

Task 7 - What have I learnt from prelim to main task?

My prelim was extremely different to my main opening sequence. My prelim was very simple and was the first time I ever used a camera like this and the first time I used the editing programme, so it was a bit scrappy too.

-Our storyboard was hand-drawn, whereas the storyboard for the prelim was printed. My storyboard
had a lot more pictures than the prelim one, as our film was a lot longer than the prelim. As well as this, we did not change anything from the storyboard in the prelim, however, lots of things were changed in our main task. This was because when actually filming we saw what would've been best to do instead of sticking to the storyboard.

-For our main task, we had a day to rehearse for the filming, and this is when we changed the storyline from what the storyboard showed, This was helpful as it made the next filming day easier as we knew what we were doing. However, we had no rehearsal for the prelim, as we got given the cameras and had to film immediately and had to complete the editing in just a few lessons.

-Our script was very short for the main task, with just one word being said the whole sequence. We felt this was better, as it built up the tension by having no one talking. The prelim was different though, but this was just to get us practising our editing skills. This would've been more helpful if we had people talking in it like most of the other students' films, but we were better off with no script.

-Planning the mise-en scene was not too hard for our main opening sequence. We wanted to make it realistic, so our actor was wearing normal clothes that you'd sleep in. The lighting however, was not as easy. That's because our light was broken, so we had to use an iPhone light as an alternative. Not only was the main light not working, but the torch also stopped working. We used another iPhone flash as a replacement for this, and it went unnoticeable in our film so it turned out alright. We had to buy some fake blood to put on the floor, but other than that, there was no make up and the actors were normal people. We used several props for our main task, and our setting was relevant to the film genre. The prelim differed to this - we used no props and the setting was just the most local place to film. The actors were also normal people however, which is similar to our main task. We used no lighting equipment in our prelim other than the normal lights on the ceiling, and clothing was normal too.

-Shooting the film was harder for the prelim, as it was our first time and had equipment to deal with. But for the main film, we held the camera in our hands instead of putting it on different equipment which just made it harder. Once we figured the equipment out, the prelim was simple to shoot, and we just repositioned the camera for each shot.

-The editing for the prelim took just a few lessons, whereas the main task took a lot more lessons and some work from home too. This is because the prelim was a simple storyline and the camera didn't need to move as much, and as well as this, the lighting did not change for the prelim whereas in the main task, it did. Also, there were more scenes to add in our main task compared with just 12 for the prelim. We did not need to add any sound for the prelim, but for the main task we had to add non-diegetic music and we also had to add titles for this but not for the prelim. Due to all this, our main task took several weeks to edit.

Task 5 - How have you attracted your target audience?

This poster would appeal to my secondary target audience more than my primary target audience. This is because people aged 24-35 would be more interested in the producers and the directors of the film, whereas people aged 15-24 would prefer a more simple poster and would be more interested in the actual storyline rather than the people who made the film. This poster has a phrase below the title to give it more thrill and emphasise the fact that it's a scary thriller film. The picture does this too, and gives the poster more of a scary look and may encourage people to see the film. We also included quotes from newspapers in the poster, as this would encourage people to come and see it if others said it was a good film.

This would be more a more appropriate poster for my target audience. This is because teens are less likely to be interested in the credits and directors, and more interested in whether it looks scary or not. It is still quite similar to the other poster, but we have just removed credits and made the picture bigger. This is because it may scare teenagers and encourage them to come and see the film, as they love a scare. We also took out the quotes from the newspaper, as teenagers may be less interested in these too. As well as making the picture bigger, we changed the colour slightly to make it more of a background rather than a picture.

Task 4 - Target Audience

Our film is a thriller. Because of this, we are aiming for our target audience to be 15+ years. This is an age where everyone is at least a teenager, which is useful as our film seems to be quite scary, but not scary enough to be an 18+ years.

Thriller films are most watched by teenagers, as they like the thrill of the films. They would enjoy the suspense and tension, and probably want to find out what was making the noises in our film. This would encourage them more to watch it. They may also like the fact that the film could make you jump, and this could be fun to watch with their friends.

Most people aged around our target audience (15-24 years old) have work/school in the week, however in their free time (i.e. on weekends), they may go to the cinema with friends to see a film. If they aren't seeing a film, they may be working at home, gaming (e.g. PS4), watching TV etc. However, this would still leave time to go see a film like ours.

Our secondary audience is 25-34 years old. This is the age when you are no longer being educated, but working full time. This means they may have less time to see a film, which is why it's not our primary target audience. However, at this age, you may still have time on a Saturday night to go and see a film. People in this age group may like our film as once again, they may enjoy the thrill and suspense of wondering what is making these noises.

Our film is not aimed at a gender in particular, although I do believe that males would prefer our film as men have more tolerance to scary films, whereas women are frightened more easily and so may not enjoy it as much as men. Our plot may attract both genders as this is something that could happen to any person and any gender, so they may be more encouraged to see it knowing it is a realistic plot.

Scream (IMDB below) is aimed at a target audience of 18. This is similar to ours but a bit higher which may be due to the fact that Scream is part comedy and may have strong sexual references which may bring the age of the target audience up. Our film is similar as they are both tense and involve a killer after someone tries to find the monster. It's a similar target audience as both films would make you jump and both are scary thrillers.
